Isaiah 62 Prayer Letter - March 2021

Dear prayer partners,

We are now well into 2021. Are we seeing clear direction, or do we see chaos and confusion?

The year 2020 was a time of confusion and chaos due to the COVID-19 crisis, and that uncertainty continues to steal hope, joy and confidence.

Recently, I have been reading Genesis chapters 1 and 2, and I hope these thoughts on those passages will encourage you.

Genesis 1:1-2 says: “In the beginning God created the Heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. The Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the water.”

In many ways, the past year of coronavirus and the rapidly changing responses by governments caused many of our plans to become formless and void. For many people, families and businesses, this chaos and formlessness was like darkness and even tomorrow – much less next year – became gloomy and unsure.

I find it encouraging that in this chaotic moment of creation the Holy Spirit has been manifestly present, hovering over the face of our chaotic waters.

In Creation, God’s first action amid the chaos was to say: “Let there be light!”

When there is confusion and chaos, or simply a new project with unknown means to make it happen, I find the first step is to ask God for His light, His wisdom.

In verse 4, it says: “… God divided the light from the darkness.” I find it useful to organize in writing that which is in the light, what I know, and that which is in darkness, what is unknown.

Then God began the detailed process of bringing order to Creation. I say organize or bring order, and not creating, because most verses in Genesis 1 do not say “God created”. For example, in verse 9 God gathered the waters s the dry land appeared.

Apparently, the land had already been created, but the water needed to be separated out so the land could appear.

Also, in verse 11 God spoke to the earth and said “bring forth plants”. In verse 12, we see that the earth brought forth plants (grass, herbs, trees etc.).

So as God lit up the chaos and separated the light from the darkness, He proceeded to bring order to what had previously been in chaos.

Elsewhere in the Bible, 1 Timothy 2:1-4 tells us to pray for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in godliness and reverence. Let us pray for the leaders of our world and the leaders of our nation, state, province or city. Let us pray that God will bring forth light amid the chaos and confusion. Let us pray that His Light and His Truth (John 8:12; 14:6) will overcome the darkness and confusion, as well as the fear and panic that this chaotic time has produced.

Most of all, let us focus on our reverence and trust in Him, independent of the quiet and certainty, or lack therefore, which our government leaders can provide.

I have been meditating (repeating to my self – as the Hebrew word for ‘meditate’ suggests in Joshua 1:8) the words of Isaiah…

“For thus says the Lord God the Holy One of Israel
In repentance and rest you shall be saved
In quietness and trust shall be your strength…” (Isaiah 30:15)

So, let us rest our confidence and trust in our Redeemer, so that we can walk in His strength, peace and salvation.

Shalom from Jerusalem!
