Isaiah 62 Prayer Letter - December 2019

Dear Prayer Partners,

As I write this month’s Isaiah 62 prayer letter, I am visiting with family in the USA and celebrating Thanksgiving. Throughout this year of 2019, I focused on gratitude and thankfulness in my daily time with the Lord, and I have discovered that there is always so much to be thankful for!

Jewish sages wrote about bringing a special sacrifice to the Temple to show thankfulness to God during four specific events: When someone returned from travel at sea, returned from a journey in the wilderness, recovered from an illness, or was released from prison.

I find this interesting because returning from travel abroad or through unpopulated regions, as well as recovering from an illness, are compared to being released from prison. This illustrates to me the great dangers in travel, the high risk of death from illness, and the risk of being imprisoned.

I am thankful that we live in a time when international travel and a trip or hike into a wilderness region has very little risk. I am also thankful that advances in medicine with antibiotics and other treatments have reduced the risk of death from many illnesses. I am reminded that when I was 9 years old, I was seriously ill with pneumonia, yet I survived because of modern antibiotics. I have taken this as a personal challenge to give our Lord thanks after every trip, be it by plane, train, bus or car. I also give Him thanks for another day of life to serve Him and proclaim His glory here on earth.

Therefore, I encourage you to give thanks to the Lord and put these scriptures to action in your life during this month of December:

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;” (Philippians 4:6)

“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” (Colossians 3:7)

“In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:8)

“We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers.” (1 Thessalonians 1:2)

So, let us give thanks to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Cor 15:57), and has caused us to live in Him today!

Shalom from Jerusalem!
